Sguassero products for Marine Applications

Fiberglass piping is used in various systems such as water ballast, stripping, cargo systems, ventilation, inert gas, tank cleaning, cooling water systems, evaporators discharge and fire systems, swimming pools, etc. and in accordance to "IMO RESOLUTION A.753(18)".

The products are conductive, non-conductive, and/or "IMO L3" fire resistantand and are manufactured with isophtalic or vinylester resins; the pressure classes available are NP 6-10-16-20 Bar (additional ones upon request) for piping systems installed outside tanks and External Pressure of 1,5 ÷ 3,5 Bar (additional ones upon request) for use inside tanks.

N. Sguassero supplies pre-fabricated systems, where each component (spool piece) is designed, manufactured and tested with the aim to eliminate any specialistic intervention at the Yard; the Company undertakes the "RESPONSABILITY' of the design and supports the Yard in the study of the best and cheapest solutions, guarantees the life of the systems with the design of the relevant supports (quite important due to the movements and stresses of the hull), with a detailed "stress analysis" and with the eventual direct supervision of the installation at the Yard with skilled personnel.

N. Sguassero materials are all covered by "Type Approval Certificates" (see MarineCertificates) issued by the following Class Societies:

Pipes and Fittings

N. Sguassero is one of the most experienced manufacturers of fiberglass pipe systems using "Dual Helical Filament Winding" technology for the pipes and "Hand Lay-Up" system for the fittings according to ASTM-UNI-AWWA standards; these technologies guarantee a final product with superior mechanical characteristics compared to other manufacturing techniques.

The possibility to "vary" the winding angle of the glass roving (main component that guarantees the mechanical strength of the product) allows N. Sguassero to produce pipes with the most appropriate modulus of elasticity, either axial or circumferential, requested for specific applications (underground - continuous support - span support).

Piping is produced with an internal chemical barrier (liner) of a variable thickness (from 1,5 to 2,5 mm and more upon request) and constructed with materials that guarantee the best chemical resistance to the medium conveyed.

Whenever fiberglass (GRP-FRP) is not able to guarantee an optimum chemical resistance, the internal liner of the piping is made of thermoplastic materials (PVC-CPVC-PP-PE-PVDF) while the structural wall is made of fiberglass for the mechanical resistance.

The standard range of diameters and lengths is the following:

ND 15/25 mm: 4-5 metre lengths;

ND 40/125 mm: 6 metre lengths;

ND 150/4.000 mm: 12 metre lengths.

Non standard lengths can be supplied on request.

Piping can withstand different load conditions (pressure, temperature etc.) that depend on the raw materials used.

A wide range of different resins for specific applications may be used with our production technology.

Piping is supplied with the following types of joints (special joints may be studied and / or supplied upon request):

Plan ends for Butt & Strap joints (lamination/bonding);

Bell & Spigot with double "O" Ring and keylock system for easy installation on site without the aid of specialized personnel;

Sleeve Coupling with double"O" Ring and keylock for easy installation and disassembly on site without removing the pipes themselves and without the aid of specialized personnel;

Conical glued/adhesive joint for quick on site installation;

Special Plain Ends for "mechanical couplings" such as Helden, Straub -Reka or similar;

Flanges, either fixed or loose (with backing ring) in the required material and drilling standard (UNI - ANSI - DIN etc.).

Moreover N. Sguassero produces piping in spool pieces (prefabricated - factory made) constructed on the basis of Customer's drawings, that are ready for installation on site without the aid of specialized personnel.

Bell & Spigot Joint

N. Sguassero manufactures a range of joints that can be installed easily without the aid of specialized personnel and without using any kind of "glue/adhesive" component.

Among these joints there is the "BELL & SPIGOT " joint, used in industry, in civil works, on board of ships and on every pipeline where it is required to:

. absorb thermal expansions;

. absorb misalignments;

. absorb eventual pipeline movements;

. absorb eventual vibration thanks to the O-Ring gaskets;

. allow eventual adjustments (within the limits of the indicated "gaps");

. substitute the traditional mechanical couplings (Helden, Straub, Reka or similar) in order to obtain an homogeneous pipeline in respect of materials and corrosion resistance.

The "BELL & SPIGOT" joint may also be supplied with a locking device consisting of a Nylon 66 round or square rod, to be inserted through a hole in the Bell and into a groove on the Spigot after the two pipes have been pushed together, thus making a tensile resistant joint.

For particular applications, specific Customer's request or special requirements, the "BELL& SPIGOT DOUBLE O-RING" joint may be supplied with locking devices that simultaneously guarantee the possibility to absorb thermal expansions.

Sleeve Coupling

N. Sguassero manufactures some type of joints that may be installed easily without the aid of specialized personnel and without using any kind of "glue/adhesive" component.

One of these joints is the "SLEEVE COUPLING" used in industry, in civil works, on board of ships and on every pipeline where it is required to:

. absorb thermal expansions;

. absorb misalignments;

. absorb eventual pipeline movements;

. absorb eventual vibration thanks to the O-Ring gaskets;

. allow eventual adjustments (within the limits of the indicated "gaps");

. allow to dismantle a section of the pipeline without the need to dismantling the complete line;

. substitute the traditional mechanical couplings (Helden, Straub, Reka or similar) in order to obtain an homogeneous pipeline in respect of materials and corrosion resistance.

The "SLEEVE" coupling has two O-Rings at each end and when fitted to the pipe is retained using a Nylon 66 keylock. The O-Rings are manufactured from materials that will be suitable for the medium being conveyed and in the appropriate dimensions and Shore hardness values.

This type of joint can be supplied with locking devices that simultaneously guarantee the possibility to absorb thermal expansions and allow a minimum degree of deflection.

Glued/Adhesive Joint

N. Sguassero, in addition to Bell & Spigot Joints, with or without keylock and Sleeve Couplings, that allow for a section of a pipeline to be easily dismantled, offers a "Conical Spigot & Socket GLUED/ADHESIVE Joint" (CJ) where it is required to perform fixed joints on site without the aid of specialized personnel.

The GLUED/ADHESIVE JOINT is used in industry, in civil works, in marine field, in desulphorization pipelines (F.G.D.) and on every pipeline where it is necessary to:

  • make the spool piece on site;
  • have a joint that does not need any anchor point;
  • assemble the components easily and rapidly;
  • allow unskilled personnel to assemble the components.

The spool pieces produced with the GLUED/ADHESIVE joints do not even need a particular type of support; in fact standard slotted collars may be used, reducing in this way weight and costs of the steel works.

When assembling the joint, the spigot end is shaved to a conical form, using a special shaving machine built by N. Sguassero, adhesive is then applied to the socket and than the two pieces are pushed together to complete the joint.

The supply of N. Sguassero complete procedures, equipment and raw materials guarantees an optimum carrying out of the joint; this method provides a conical fixed joint that can be assembled on site without the need of specialized personnel.
