What is most important for valves used on product- and chemical tankers in the shipping - shipbuilding industry? That the valves maintain a tight shut-off to avoid any mixing of cargo.
This is where SOMAS triple-excentric butterfly valves enter the picture, used in the loading/unloading system. Combining unbeatable tightness with minimal wear on disc and seat makes the butterfly valves a perfect match. The most common material used in the seat is metal, but depending on the cargo a soft seat (PTFE) may be used.
The cargo valves are perfect for the shipping - shipbuilding industry. The cargo valves are operated either by hydraulic actuators or gears. These have a special surface treatment enabling them to operate in a marine environment. SOMAS also provides ball valves and ball segment valves for applications in the shipping- shipbuilding industry.
SOMAS cargo valves - perfect for the shipping- shipbuilding industry
The butterfly valve is the perfect choice for the shipping- shipbuilding industry in general, which also makes it suitable as a cargo valve, mainly due to its massive seat of stainless steel. Properties like low weight, ease of operation and most importantly: excellent tightness, makes the butterfly valve the preferred choice for marine applications.
Cargo valves for fluids
The butterfly valve is useful for cargo valve applications. The metal seat is not affected by high flow rates, and the valve maintains good tightness even after many years of operation.
Key Characteristics of the butterfly valve
Dimension DN80 - DN400
Pressure class PN10 - PN25 and ANSI 150
Supplied in wafer as well in lugged and flanged design
Unique disc geometry and homogenous metal seat provides tightness to IEC 534-4 class V. PTFE seat as an option provides tightness to IEC 534-4 class VI
Suitable for applications in temperatures up to 350°C
Advanced triple eccentric design provides excellent tightness
SOMAS ball valves - for gases and liquids
Any leakage of gas or liquid has to be avoided at all cost. SOMAS ball valve is designed to take care of this issue. The valve is a full bore, flanged ball valve with cylindrical bore made in dimensions from DN 25 to DN 400. The valve is made from stainless steel with spring loaded seats for good tightness, even at low differential pressure.
The valve ball is hardchromed as standard, but can also be supplied with Hi-Co coating. The valve can be supplied with actuator and accessories for manual operation, on/off or control applications.
Ball valves also in 3-piece form
SOMAS 3-piece full-bore ball valves are mainly intended for use as manually operated valves or remotely actuated on/off valves. The ball valve meets ISO standards .
The valve is available with threaded ends, welding ends or flanges. It is also possible to combine different types of ends.
SOMAS 3-piece full-bore ball valves are equipped with seats of two materials. Fibreglass-reinfoced PTFE as standard, or carbon-filled PTFE adapted for steam.

Ball segment valves - high capacity in control applications
High capacity, excellent tightness and free flow. These words aptly describe some of the superior properties of the ball segmant valve. SOMAS ball segment valves have been designed to fulfill the strictest requirements of the process industry on the control valves used. Due to its free flow and choice of different materials for housing and seat, the ball segment valve is usually the best choice for the industry.
Design of the ball segment valve
The ball segment valves high capaity results from the design of its seat and ball segment. Compared to other valve designs it is often possible to use smaller and more economical valve sizes. What puts SOMAS ball segment valves apart from many other suppliers is that the free flow part minimises the risk of clogging.
Key Features of the ball segment valve
SOMAS ball segment valves offers the following:
Dimensions in the range DN25/2 - DN700.
Pressure classes PN10 - PN100.
Good tighness in IEC 534-4 class V as standard with stellite seat and IEC 534-4 class VI with PTFE seat.
Ball segment and shaft as a one-piece design gives backlash-free operation and accurate control.
Double trunnion supported segment gives high durability and low torque requirement.
Body design makes maintenance easy. Seat can be exchanged or replaced without removing the actuator or dismantling the valve.
Body for centrally mounted ball segment with continuous seat-trim contact to eliminate potential problems with dirt build-up and fluid crystallisation.
Body option for eccentrically mounted ball segment for clean hot medias like steam and gas at high temperatures - maximum 550°C.
Trim options available as options to solve problems with noise and cavitations. Service - an important part of SOMAS quality concept
When you choose SOMAS product line you will get products designed for trouble-free operation that will require a very low level of maintenance. What more can you ask for?
