Accommodation Areas

FOGTEC systems are most effective for the installation in accommodation areas on board of ships. System activation in case of fire leads to an immediate drop in temperature and protects nearby objects and people from radiant heat. An evacuation of actuated areas is possible without danger for personnel. Even hidden spaces are reached by the gas like spreading water mist. Pure water mist is no danger to people and increases surviving time of people caught in the activation area.

FOGTEC systems use only very small amounts of water, reducing water damage to a minimum. In most cases rooms can be used again shortly after the system has been turned off. System activation caused by false alarms or sabotage usually do not lead to high costs. FOGTEC systems for accommodation areas operate in a similar manner to conventional sprinkler systems. The nozzles are activated independently by means of a fast response glass bulb allowing for localised protection and immediate fire control. Pipework with diameters of 10 to 40 mm guarantee easy installation.

The pump units and pressure cylinders for the water supply require only very little space. FOGTEC high pressure water mist systems have shown their reliability in many full scale fire tests. Galley Covering

FOGTEC technology is ideal for fighting cooking oil fires. The reason for this success becomes obvious when considering the way the system works. The water mist droplets are so fine that they are light enough not to penetrate the oil surface. The droplets rapidly absorb the heat of the fire and so extinguish fires rapidly while continuing to cool the oil and effectively prevent re-ignition.

In the past, deep fat fryers in ships galleys were mostly protected with chemical-based extinguishing agents. The time consuming cleaning work required after discharge, and the resulting business interruptions are considerably reduced when using FOGTEC systems.

The systems are activated automatically via a fast acting detection system. Service and maintenance costs are substantially lower than most for other extinguishing systems.

Local Application

Local add-on protection for main engines, boilers and purifiers is mandatory for passenger ships of 500 gross tonnage and cargo ships of 2000 gross tonnage from July 2002 on. The IMO has ruled that the engine rooms of most vessels over 2000 tonnes must be fitted with a water based local application fire fighting system.

Machinery Spaces

Machinery spaces on board of ships necessitate reliable extinguishing systems.

Most common are still CO2 systems, even if they have vast disadvantages, like the need for sealed compartments and long pre-warning times, due to their toxicity.

FOGTEC high pressure water mist systems offer an ideal protection of such areas without the necessity of engine shut down, personnel evacuation or sealing of the machinery spaces. Immediate cooling of the entire volume ensures that fires are securely extinguished and machinery surfaces are cooled to a level where no re-ignitions may occur.

Beside minimised water consumption, rapid washing of smoke particles and combustible gases represent additional benefits. Activation is manual or automatic by a separate detection system. System approval for machinery spaces from the Marine Safety Agency (MCA) is available, covering machinery rooms up to 250 m3.

Offshore

FOGTEC water mist systems are an efficient and environmentally friendly alternative to deluge and gas extinguishing systems for the protection of accommodation and machinery areas on offshore platforms.

Particularly gas turbines represent one of the largest risks on offshore platforms, which can ideally be protected with a FOGTEC water mist system.

There is no other extinguishing agent having the same cooling ability like water. Numerous tests have proven, that water mist generated by FOGTEC systems can reduce the temperature during liquid fuel fires much faster and efficient than most conventional systems because of the comparatively poor cooling properties of gas and deluge systems.

The water mist leads to an immediate drop in temperature in case of fire and protects nearby objects and people from radiant heat. Pure water is no danger to people and can be activated immediately after detection of the fire. The smoke scrubbing effect of FOGTEC systems, thus binding of smoke particles and washing of water soluble gases, considerably reduces emissions compared to deluge and gas extinguishing systems.

Approval test series according to international IMO regulations were successfully completed and witnessed by major international classification authorities, like Lloyd's Register, DNV, ABS and Germanischer Lloyd. FOGTEC has successfully approved the system for gas turbine protection according to FM standards.

Wall Cabinets

FOGTEC wall cabinets combine the advantages of fixed installations with benefits of mobile FOGTEC systems.

FOGTEC wall cabinets operate on the same principle as fixed FOGTEC systems, except that the high pressure water mist is produced by a manually operated FOGGUN. The spray patterns of the mist being discharged can easily be adjusted to the risk. A particularly fine mist can be used to effectively fight liquid and dust fires without splashing or disturbing the fire load. A high-energy spray can be used to fight larger fires.

FOGTEC wall cabinets are suited for a wide range of applications in industry, but also in archives, museums and EDP rooms. Low water consumption, ease of use and the resulting reduction of damage, distinguish the FOGTEC wall cabinets from conventional systems. In industrial sites, FOGTEC wall cabinets are used to complement fixed fire fighting systems or to protect risks for which a protection by fixed systems is not practicable for technical or economic reasons.

A small diameter hose, as well as the easily manageable FOGGUN ensure great flexibility, with almost no reaction force on discharge.

FOGTEC wall cabinets can be integrated into a pipe network of a fixed FOGTEC pump system or installed as a separate system.
