Kaminco proudly announces the graduation of George S. Kaminis

(01 / 02 / 2009)

Kaminco proudly announces the graduation of George S. Kaminis from the University of Miami's Rosenstiel School with School's First Undergrad Degree in Marine and Atmospheric Science Program, with majors in Marine Affairs.

The graduation of George S. Kaminis, son of Sotirios S. Kaminis and grandson of George S. Kaminis, marks a new era in Kaminco and continues the half a century family's history which has been focused in Marine Industry.

The story of KAMINCO starts at the beginning of the sixties, when a young Mariner, Mechanical and Electrical Engineer Mr. George S. Kaminis, with a sound in shipboard, shipbuilding and Naval. experience, emerged in Piraeus as a Consultant and Technical Representative of Diesel Engines, and Corrosion Engineer. It was the time the Greek Shipping was switching from steam to diesel and from conventional to special coatings. In both sections he has been instrumental in helping Greek Shipping “one step ahead”.

At the begining of 90's, Sotirios G. Kaminis, after nine years studies in the U.S.A., returns to Greece with a Msc degree in Aeronautics and Human Resaurces Management and a Phd degree in International Business Management. After he fulfills his service in the Hellenic Navy, he joins forces with his father George S. Kaminis, adding modern knowledge and power that reinforces KAMINCO capabilities to diversify and in other new technology horizons.

Time now for George S. Kaminis to continue the tradition...

It is the first time in the Rosenstiel School's rich 65-year history that undergraduate degrees were conferred by the Rosenstiel School's administration. After 30 years of conducting undergraduate education jointly with the University's College of Arts and Sciences, President Donna Shalala shifted full administration of the undergraduate Marine and Atmospheric Science Program, with majors in Marine Science, Marine Affairs and Meteorology, to the Rosenstiel School in Fall 2008.

UM Rosenstiel School's inaugural undergraduate class is comprised of: George Kaminis who received his B.A. in Marine Affairs, and Megan James, Graham Kolodziej, Elizabeth Restrepo and Jordan Ross who received their B.S. in Marine and Atmospheric Science.

"This year the University welcomed its highest ranked and most widely recognized first-year Marine and Atmospheric Science class ever.  The Rosenstiel School also enlisted the largest and most highly qualified graduate class in more than a decade, which speaks volumes of the relevance of environmental science and policy in today's world," said Dr. Otis Brown, dean of UM's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science.  "We are very proud of these students, who are each breaking new ground in their academic endeavors, and who will move on to become passionate stewards of our planet."
